What's a Fringe?
The Fringe is a 10-and-a-half day celebration of live theatre. Going since 1982, Edmonton's Fringe Festival now annually welcomes more than 130 theatre companies to participate on 13 indoor stages, 2 outdoor stages, and 14 Bring Your Own Venues. The Fringe provides all artists, both emerging and established with the opportunity to produce their play no matter the content, form or style. The Canadian Fringe Festival model does not jury or censor the artists' work in any way. Theatre companies are selected in a non-juried manner and those given a "slot" work within the technical guidelines of the Festival to produce their own art. Artists receive 100% of the revenue generated from the set ticket price. Festival patrons are offered physically and financially accessible arts experiences, and are encouraged to enter into dialogues with the artists and other audience members. The Fringe is also a great place to buy Green Onion cakes. |
